A Keyword Golden Ratio Calculator is a very useful tool when building a new website
What is Golden Keyword Ratio
It helps you find low competition keywords that you can rank for fairly easily based on the KGR Keyword Formula. In essence, keywords where the number of articles addressing the subject are far lower than the number of queries seeking information on it.
Of course, these Keywords are low competition because not so many websites are targeting them. This might also mean that not very many users are searching for them, but that is not always the case.
In our Article on the SEO Avalanche technique, we also look at using the KGR keyword formula with higher volume keywords, but for now lets look at low volume search terms.
So what is a Keyword Golden Ratio Calculator?
The Keyword Golden Ratio concept was first developed by Doug Cunnington back in 2016.
He recognized that there was an opportunity to quickly rank articles where a long tail keyword had more monthly searches than there are articles answering the search question. He developed a simple formula to identify those Keywords.
Doug found that the best keyword targets had less than 250 monthly searches, and to qualify as KGR keywords they must also return a Keyword Golden Ration score of 0.25 or less.
You can see Doug Cunnington outlining the concept via Video below.
Using the KGR Calculator Above
It’s easy to test individual Keywords using the Table Above, (a Green result is a genuine KGR keyword target), but for ongoing use you will want to download my Free Keyword Golden Ratio tool at the end of this article.
To start using the Keyword Golden Ratio Calculator properly you need three things:
1 A decent Keyword Research Tool ( I am using KWFinder).
2. A properly formatted Spreadsheet (you can download mine below).
3. A little patience
Getting Started with Keyword Golden Ratio Calculator
Enter your seed Keyword into your Keyword tool. I prefer to use KWFinder by Mangools. It allows me to stipulate the monthly search volume I am looking for.
For this example, I used “Best Electric Shaver for” as my Seed Keyword . Then sorted the resulting list by search volume from smallest to largest.
Drop selected Keywords and their monthly search volume generated by your tool, into the first two columns of my KGR Calculator.
You can insert the entire list for extensive KGR research, but in this example, I tried 3 before hitting a winner with best electric shaver for women’s facial hair
Step 2 “Allintitle:” Google search.
To use the Calculator we need to know exactly how many articles exist on Google for the Keyword you are considering.
To find this number, simply go to Google and in the Search Bar type:
Allintitle:followed by each keyword in turn
Google will tell you how many website posts include those same words in the title of the article.
With the answer coming up just below the search query
So in this example we typed in
allintitle:best electric shaver for women’s facial hair
And we find that there are only 2 results for that search.
While you are there, copy the search string into the final column of your spreadsheet (it makes checking again easier later on), and type the # of results, (in this case 2) into the “Allintitle” column.
The KGR field already contains the KGR formula so if that column turns Green you have found a genuine KGR keyword. (Scroll over Image to expand).
Step 3 Research Long Tail Keywords
The process of finding these KGR opportunities can be a bit time consuming. It’s not all that often that I come across a viable target after just three tries.
The other thing is that Google will likely throw up a screen like this regularly just to make sure that you are a real person and not a Bot.
It’s annoying and slows you down.
What do KGR keywords do for a new website?
One of our favorite ways to make money online, is with Content based Websites, which need rankings to drive traffic.
The main objective of this process is to find Keywords that your new website can rank for fairly quickly. They might only might bring you a small flow of traffic.
Don’t be afraid to write for Keywords showing no searches. These should rank on page one immediately, and any page one rankings on Google will help build your sites profile regardless of traffic levels.
When to Publish Keyword Golden Ratio articles
The time to start looking for and posting KGR articles is after you have published your core website data, including at least one of the pages you expect to be a main money earning page.
The Keyword Golden Ratio posts should be relevant to those main pages, and link up to them, so that as your KGR pages rank they can add a little power to your main pages.
This will also help you to Rank the more important pages, which are usually targeting much more competitive keywords. In most cases, your site will not start to rank for competitive keywords until it has some Domain Authority, and trust in the eyes of Goggle so these KGR articles help.
Writing articles for a Keyword Golden Ratio Keyword
Whether you are adding early content to a website built from Scratch, or from a starter site you purchased, the intention is to create a piece of Content that:
Fully Covers the Subject
Does a Better job than articles already on page 1 for your “allintitle” search
Incorporates all the main Keywords of the topic
Is good enough to retain it’s ranking even after the search volume grows
Internal Links in KGR posts
Remember to link up to your main pages, and across to other related smaller posts as this will also help them get ranked.
